Answering Question 2

Does TNR Really Reduce the Number of Stray Cats Over Time?

Many people love street cats, but too many cats can cause problems. To control the population, many groups use TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return). But does TNR really work to reduce the number of stray cats over time?

The short answer is yes, but only if we do it right.

How TNR Works to Decrease the Population

When we look at scientific studies, TNR can successfully reduce cat populations for a few key reasons:

No More Kittens: Sterilized cats cannot have babies. This stops the cycle of growth.

Fewer New Cats Move In: A stable, healthy group of outdoor cats will defend their area. This stops new, un-sterilized cats from moving into the neighborhood.

Natural Decrease: Over time, the number of cats goes down naturally as they grow old.

The Secret to Success: High Intensity

Studies show that TNR does not work well if we only do it to a few cats. To truly reduce the population, we must sterilize 75% to 85% or more of the cats in that specific area.

If we skip too many cats, the remaining ones will quickly have more kittens, and the population will stay the same.

Conclusion

TNR is a humane and effective way to reduce stray cat numbers over time. However, it requires teamwork, time, and high effort. When a community works together to sterilize most of the cats in an area, the number of community cats definitely goes down.
